Case Study:

Global manufacturer uses Procura Training Needs Assessment tool to define a procurement capability development programme and upskill the team.

Client

Global manufacturer with sites across the US, Europe, Australia and India, with more than 200 procurement resources, working across over 20 business units.

The Challenge

Following an acquisition strategy combined with the development of a group procurement function, our client recognised the need to bring together procurement resources from across all business units with an objective to both upskill and standardise the procurement skills and capabilities across the group.

With resources spread across 20 cultures and 4 continents, Procura’s cloud-based TNA (Training Needs Assessment) tool provided the ideal way to develop standardised competencies, assess the training and development needs of individuals and build a comprehensive training and development plan.

Approach

In the first phase, the Procura team worked with the senior procurement leadership team to, with input from HR, build a competency framework for the procurement organisation. This provided each role level with a structure of competencies and desired standard. Competencies covered core processes such as sourcing, supplier and contract management but also skills such as negotiation, contracting, supplier financial analysis and even Inco terms.

The TNA (Training Needs Assessment) tool was then utilised for each resource in the organisation to self-assess their experience, knowledge and level of understanding. Individual, business unit and team assessments were then validated and moderated by leadership to provide a clear understanding of the training and development needs of the entire procurement organisation.

The outputs of the TNA were then used to build a comprehensive training and development programme. This included on-line training modules and negotiation excellence workshops, all hosted within the organisation’s Learning Management System (LMS) so that training sessions could be refreshed and used for new starters.

Results

  • Procurement competency framework established for all roles and levels
  • On-line Training Needs Assessment undertaken with all resources
  • Individual Personal Development Plans
  • Team and Business Unit specific development plans
